Community Celebration and Syracuse Symphony
Concert in the Park
Friday
evening, July 2, 2010
OPERATION YELLOW RIBBON (OYR)
is proud to announce plans for the Northern New York 2010 We
Support our Soldiers and Families Community Celebration. On
Friday evening, July 2, 2010 the residents of Northern New York, also
known as “Drum Country”, are invited to Thompson Park at 5:45 p.m. to
participate in the pre show and community rally.
This year’s event celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the Reactivation of
the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum and its inclusion into the North
Country. Since September 11, 2001, New Yorkers from the Big Apple to the
Great Lakes to the Canadian border have stood shoulder to shoulder in
support of our nation’s response to the War on Terrorism. Soldiers of
the 10th Mountain Division were among the first on the ground in
Afghanistan that fall, leading the attack. Troops from Fort Drum have
deployed multiple times to Afghanistan and to Iraq – with thousands
still there today.
In addition to our 10th Mountain Division soldiers, there are thousands
of Army, National Guard, Reserve, Marine, Navy, Air Force and Coast
Guard heroes, men and women that are our family members, relatives and
neighbors; standing in harm’s way so that our Nation is assured the
freedom to celebrate its birthday this July 4th weekend, and for many
more in the future. Indeed, there is not a North Country community that
hasn’t been touched by the loss of a loved one in the service to country
during these past few years.
Here’s your chance to demonstrate your support!
The OYR Rally precedes the Syracuse Symphony’s annual free public
outdoor concert known as the Symphony in the Park. Entrances and
roadways into Thompson Park will be decorated with American flags and
yellow ribbons to set the stage for this outdoor celebration. The public
is invited to arrive even earlier than usual this year to participate in
the rally and listen to the sounds of the popular local musical group
fred & The EDs.
WWNY 7NEWS and WNYF FOX 28 on air personalities, Mel Busler and Rick
DeFranco, will partner as emcees for this event. Confirmed speakers
include Major General James Terry, Commanding General, 10th Mountain
Division and Fort Drum, Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava, Mr. Kenneth
Blankenbush, Chairman of the Jefferson County Board of Legislators and
Watertown Mayor Jeffrey Graham. A Moment of Silence in remembrance of
those who have died in the service to our nation will also be included
in the rally agenda.
Door sized yellow ribbons, yellow ribbon pins, and other support
materials will be available at the rally.
